General  & history

Hunters 34 have been sold in large number (more than 1000s) from 1983 to 1987. They got a reputation of being a very roomy cruiser with a good turn of speed (average PHRF: 138).

This particular boat is in overall very good condition. For most of its life the boat was used as a weekend cruiser and club racer, until 2003 when it was stored on dry land due to relocation of previous owner. From 2009 to 2015, I invested a lot of efforts to make it more suitable for voyaging. We sailed the boat from Quebec to Nova Scotia, and then south to Bahamas before coming back north. She is ready to travel some more!

Recent renovations & upgrades

These works have been done progressively between 2010 and 2014. Equipments (solar panels, refrigeration, etc.) were added in late 2014.

Hull: Painted topsides with Interlux Brightside.

Deck: Painted with Interlux Perfection and Kiwigrip. Repaired hairline cracks.  All screws from ports & sea hood were eliminated and replaced by bonding or trough-bolting. All bolts holes for jib-rail, winchs and clutchs were enlarged & filled with epoxy. Rebedded opening hatches. Overall most of possible water intrusion paths have been eliminated. Deck was sounded and dried/injected with epoxy where skin unbonding or moisture was found. Changed lifelines to dyneema rope. Added safety netting to lifelines. Added jacklines fittings.

Cockpit: Modified the wheel pedestal to lower the wheel, much more comfortable. Replaced steering chain. Added fiberglass reinforcements under opening seats and anchor locker lid. Replaced cockpit drain hoses.

Main saloon: New layout designed with emphasis on open floor space and storage compartments. All woodwork done with marine teak-faced plywood and Iroko hardwood. Replaced cushions & covers. Added drinking water filter. Added a Novakool fridge/freezer conversion kit to the icebox. Icebox bottom was lifted by 4 inches and insulation added all-around. Replaced overhead panels.

Aft cabin: Replaced bunk sole. New fully opening aft engine access panel. Hull side covered by insulating foam and carpet. Replaced cushions covers. Added a charcoal burning stove, heating power estimated at 1500W.

Forward cabin: Added a 6” memory foam  mattress. Added partial bulkhead to support inner forestay.

Head: Replaced head with Jabsco compact. Second sink area in front of head  has been modified to create a small working shop, can be retrofitted.

Electricity: Added 300W of monocrystallin solar panels & MPPT charge controller with display. Two size 31 deep cycle battery and one size 27 starting battery.

Rigging: Added an inner forestay. Internal supports for rigging have been inspected with “snake” camera and found in good condition.

Engine: Replaced noise insulation foam. Replaced primary fuel pump. Replaced cutless bearing & packing. Engine aligned. Replaced mixing elbow.

Mast step: Replaced the wooden mast step for a thick wall aluminum tube.

Rudder: Structurally reinforced with 12 layers of unidirectional fiberglass on each side and 1 layer of cloth covering all surfaces. Rudder tube junction to hull was heavily reinforced. Include a custom aluminum emergency rudder designed to ABS standards for offshore sailboat, quite bulky but can be stored either in forward of aft cabins.

Ports: All opening and fixed ports have been changed. The two most forward ports have been eliminated and deck rebuilt in-place of those ports.

Dinghy: Added composite dinghy davits.
